Данните са измерени от двата сателита GOES, които следят слънчевата активност и слънчевите изригвания. Големите слънчеви изригвания могат да променят земната йоносфера и така да причинят пропадане на високочестотното разпространение на радио сигналите в огрятата от слънцето хемисфера. Слънчевите изригвания могат също да са придружени от КИМ (коронално изхвърляне на маса) и да причинят геомагнитни бури, които водят до аврора. SWPC изпраща сигнал за промяна в космическото време при ниво M5 (5×10-5 W/m2). Някои големи изригвания са съпроводени със силни радио избухвания, които могат да повлияят на другите радио честоти и да причинят проблеми с връзката със сателити и радио навигации.
Определение за слънчево изригване
Слънчевото изригване е мощна експлозия в слънчевата атмосфера с енергия еквивалентна на 10 милиона водородни бомби. Слънчевите изригвания се случват в слънчевата корона и хромосфера, нагрявайки плазмата до 10 милиона градуса по Целзий и ускорявайки последващите електрони, протони и по-тежки йони близо до скоростта на светлината. Те произвеждат електромагнитна радиация в електромагнитния спектър във всички дължини на вълните, от дългите радио вълни до гама лъченията с най-къса дължина на вълната. Повечето изригвания се появяват около слънчевите петна, където интензивни магнитни полета се издигат от слънчевата повърхност в короната. Произведената енергия, асоциирана със слънчевите изригвания, докато се увеличава може да минат няколко часа или дори няколко дни, но на повечето изригвания са нужни само няколко минути, за да освободят енергията си.
Класификация на слънчевите изригвания
Слънчевите изригвания се класифицират на А, В, С, М или Х според пиковия енергиен поток (във ватове на квадратен метър, W/m2) в близост до Земята от 100 до 800 пикометра (10-12 m), както са измерени от сателитите GOES. Всеки клас има пиков енергиен поток десет пъти по-голям от предходния, като изригванията от Х клас имат пиков енергиен поток от 10−4 W/m2. Всеки отделен клас има линейна скала от 1 до 9, като изригването от Х2 е два пъти по-силно от изригването от Х1 и четири пъти по-силно от изригването от М5. По-мощните изригвания от М и Х клас често са асоциирани с разнообразни ефекти върху средата в близкото на Земята пространство. Въпреки че класификацията на GOES обикновено се използва да отчете силата на изригването, това е само един от показателите.

Последното събитие е най-новото слънчево изригване, автоматично засечено от сателита GOES 16 или въведено ръчно, ако алгоритъмът за откриване се провали, без да се вземат предвид каквито и да били по-ранни събития.
С други думи, “максимум” се отнася само до максималния (пиковия) рентгенов поток за конкретното въпросно изригване; така че, въпреки че събитие от М-клас може да е настъпило по-рано, то ще бъде заменено от следващото засечено изригване, ако последващото изригване е само събитие от клас С.
Особеностите за определяне на началото, максимума и края на рентгеново събитие са:
Началното време на рентгеново събитие се дефинира като първата минута, от последователни 4 минути, на стръмно монотонно нарастване на 0,1-0,8 nm поток.
Максимумът на рентгеновото събитие се приема като минутата в пиковия рентгенов поток.
Крайното време е времето, когато нивото на потока намалява до нивото на половината между максималния поток и фоновото ниво преди изригването.
Понякога алгоритъмът няма да проработи при изригване с постепенно нарастване (често за събития при периферните области) и синоптикът ще трябва да въведе данните ръчно.
